Winter Storm Preparation

It’s time to start getting ready for winter! 

Get prepared now for windstorms and power outages that may last days.  The national weather forecast for this winter predicts storms called the “Pineapple Express” which brings extreme amounts of rain and high winds.  These storms may cause local flooding, downed trees and wide scale power outages.

The Fire and Police Departments, along with the City of Bainbridge Island's Public Works Department work hard to keep roads open and to protect our citizens.  However, there are step you can take to help us help you.

Be prepared and be safe.

Being Prepared:
 You should be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least three days
 Extra flashlights and batteries
 Charge your cell phone batteries and be sure to have a car charger
 Stock up on bottled water
 Stock up on non-perishable foods
 Fill you car’s gas tank
 If you have a generator – make sure it works; don’t wait until the power goes out to test it
 Keep a weeks worth of prescription medications available

Being Safe:
 Never use charcoal grills or portable camp stoves inside – the fumes are deadly
 Avoid using candles
 Never leave a lit candle unattended
 During the storm, refrain from walking outdoors or driving if possible
 Never touch, move or drive over downed wires – only the experts know for sure if they are not energized
 Do not drive under partially fallen trees or broken branches – they could snap at any time
 Do not drive around safety barricades – they are there to protect you
