Facilities Update

6/8/2018:  New Fire Station 21 is now open and staffed at 8895 Madison Ave. The Department greatly appreciates the public’s support and is anxious to show the community your new fire station later this summer.

5/8/2018:  The countdown is on!  Finishing touches are being put on the new station, and soon we will start moving in.  Once we are fully operational, a Grand Opening event will be planned.  Stay tuned for more information...

 2/8/2018:  The construction of Station 21 continues to move ahead as scheduled.  The projected completion date is still on track for May 2018.

10/10/2017:  The dry summer allowed us to work at a pace that is keeping us on track.  The walls are up, and the roof is near completion too!

8/16/2017:  Construction of new Station 21 is well underway, with project completion still on track for May of 2018.

5/11/2017:  The Board of Commissioners of the Bainbridge Island Fire Department joined FORMA Construction and Mackenzie Architect for the ceremonial groundbreaking of new Fire Station 21. The ground breaking ceremony marked the beginning of construction, with the projected completion in May of 2018.

4/26/2017:  The demolition of Station 21 on Madison Ave. is near completion!

On May 11, 2017 at 5:00 p.m., the Board of Commissioners of the Bainbridge Island Fire Department will join FORMA Construction and Mackenzie Architect for the ceremonial groundbreaking of our new Fire Station 21 located at 8895 Madison Ave.  The ground breaking ceremony will mark the beginning of construction for the new approximately 27,000 square foot fire station.  Construction is expected to be completed in May of 2018.

3/27/2017:  After 44 years of service, the time has come when the Bainbridge Island Fire Department Station 21, located at 8895 Madison Avenue, will be demolished to make room for our new Headquarters station at the same location. FORMA Construction has been awarded the demolition and construction contract for the building of our new Fire Station 21. FORMA has an extensive background in fire station construction throughout the region, including Seattle and Olympia. The demolition is expected to begin in mid-April with construction estimated to be complete in 2018.

The Fire Department's Administrative office has moved to Station 23, located at 12985 Phelps Road. All response personnel have been relocated to Station 22, located at 7934 NE Bucklin Hill Road and the Phelps Road Station 23.

3/17/2016:  The Department has received final approval from the City's Design Review Board.  Through the review process we have continued to refine our new fire station designs.  Please see below for our updated renderings.

2/22/2017:  The Department has continued to make progress on our new and existing facilities. 

  •  Station 21 – Building Permits have been issued and the project is currently out to bid
  • Station 22 – Building Permit is pending
  • Station 23 – Renovation to Station 23 is now complete

1/22/2016: The Department continues to refine its new fire station designs.  Please see below for our updated renderings.

  • We have begun the City of Bainbridge Island's permitting process.
  • Schematic Design Phase is almost complete.
  • Landscaping concepts are being reviewed.

11/16/2015: The Department is well underway in the construction of our new fire stations. The initial permitting process has already started for the new facilities. Ground-breaking is scheduled for summer of 2016. In addition, several other milestones have been accomplished:

  • We have signed a contract with the Seattle-based architectural firm Mackenzie.
  • Boundary surveys have been completed.
  • Site evaluations are nearing completion.
  • Mackenzie has completed 90% of the design for your new stations.
  • Financing for the Capital Facilities Project was secured and bonds have been sold.  The Department's AA+ bond rating and strong financials resulted in overall cost reductions, which allows for a payoff of 19 years instead of the projected 20 years.
08/27/2015: At the August 27th Board of Commissioner's meeting, the Fire Chief was authorized to enter into a contract wit the Seattle firm Mackenzie for design services to replace and renovate our fire stations. The BIFD staff will work closely with Mackenzie to ensure the new stations will meet the needs of our firefighters and the community.

03/02/2015: The Department issued a Request for Qualifications for design and construction services to replace Station 21 and Station 22 and renovations to Station 23 to facilitate full-time staffing.

02/10/2015: With the approval by our community of a $16 million dollar facilities bond, the Department is moving forward with the next steps in designing and building fire stations designed to support the needs of the Department for the next 50 years.
