FF/EMT TESTING PROCESS

The Bainbridge Island Fire Department routinely tests for the position of Entry-Level Firefighter/EMT throughout each year.  The qualifications for the position of Entry-Level Firefighter/EMT can be found hereSuccessful Completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) is required within the last six months.  (BIFD does not conduct the CPAT. Third-party options such as Public Safety Testing or National Testing Network are available.)

Testing processes generally consist of:

  • An application submittal
  • An online written examination
  • An in-person assessment center
  • Chiefs’ Interviews for top-performing candidates (when openings are available)

The following reference materials are currently used for the FF/EMT testing process:

  • IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting, 7th edition
  • Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, AAOS 12th edition
  • BIFD-specific information. All information found at bifd.org.

Applications are submitted directly to BIFD using  or through Public Safety Testing during open application periods.

Successful candidates can expect several pre-employment conditions including:

  • Background Investigation
  • NFPA-compliant Medical Examination
  • Suitability Profile Examination
  • Successful Completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
